CORNWALL’S largest rural youth organisation is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with a series of special events and a call for members past and present to dig out their old photographs.

Cornwall Federation of Young Farmers’ Club wants to create a ‘wall of memories’ to put on display during the Royal Cornwall Show in June to mark the special milestone.

“The idea is a simple one, we are hoping that past members will have stashed away photographs of what they used to get up to,” said county chairman, William Dymond.

“Looking through the archives in the county office we have already come across photos of competitions that no longer take place such as poultry trussing – we would love to see more.”

The county archive has also thrown up photos of a youthful Jethro, the award-winning Cornish comedian, at a trophy presentation in the 1970s; and members planting trees with Lady Falmouth at Tregothnan after the 1987 storms.

“If we get a good response it is hoped that we will be able to make a display that shows Cornwall YFC through our 75 years,” said vice-chairman Ed Humber.

“I am sure there will be some differences between what we get up to now but I am also sure that there will be many similarities”.

In addition to the photographic display at the Royal Cornwall Show the federation is marking their 75th anniversary with a ball on Saturday, February 18 at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay.

Another anniversary highlight will be the opening of the gardens at the Tregothnan Estate to the public by the federation’s president, the Honourable Evelyn Boscawen.

There are also plans afoot for a “birthday tea” during the summer months where it is hoped that past and present members will compete against each other in traditional YFC games and activities.

History

“Cornwall YFC has a long history of which we are rightly very proud,” said county organiser Katherine Spencer. “We are a forward-thinking organisation with traditional values and it is testament to our members and YFC family and friends that the federation is as strong in 2012 as it was in the 1930s.

“When the first YFCs were started their aim was to increase the knowledge and skills of youngsters specifically in calf rearing and animal husbandry; today our members come from all walks of life from hairdressers and teachers to professional dancers and civil engineers and the skills and knowledge imparted ranges from NVQs and apprenticeships in team-leading and management to public speaking and stock judging but the spirit is the same.”

The Atlantic Hotel will be well represented at the biggest Bridal Exhibition in Cornwall. This Valentines week sees The Hall For Cornwall stage their annual Bridal Exhibition.

After being short listed for the prestigious Cornish Challenge award, Silks Bistro & Champagne Bar walked away with a very impressive 3rd place prize.

The Cornish Challenge is run by Cornwall Catering Excellence, a partnership of seven longstanding Cornish family businesses and Cornwall College, who work together to promote the best of Cornish hospitality and encourage businesses to boost the local economy by choosing local suppliers.

Monday night saw Silks Bistro compete with five other restaurants. Putting their culinary skills to the test, the teams were competing to win over the panel of judges, comprising two of Cornwall’s leading chefs, Paul Ripley of Rick Stein’s Seafood Bar in Falmouth and Nigel Tabb of Tabb’s in Truro, who were joined by head judge Elizabeth Carter, consultant editor of The Good Food Guide.

Each team had to produce a four course menu based around seasonal Cornish ingredients and serve it to the judges in addition to 20 guests on the night.

To be short-listed for this prestigious competition is quite an achievement, but to walk away with the 3rd place prize is a very impressive. We would like to take the time to thank Aaron, Claire and all the staff at Silks Bistro who partook in the evening and we hope this is one of many awards to follow.

Silks Bistro has made it through to the final of this years Cornish Challenge. Silks will be competing against 5 other teams for the coveted Cornwall Challenge title of 2012. In the first round, the team were tasked with designing a four course menu using Cornish seasonal ingredients Now, the will be perfecting their chosen menu, which they will serve two tables of invited guests and the judges on the night of the final, to be held on 6th February at Cornwall College.

The Cornish Challenge is a Cornwall Catering Excellence initiative. Its aim is to encourage and reward good local restaurants who make the best of Cornwall’s fantastic produce. An essential element of every restaurant is its presentation and customer service so the challenge tests this too.

The fifth annual Excellence in Business Training Awards, hosted by Cornwall College Business, recognise exceptional training and development in organisations across the south west, who develop their staff through training and who have seen exceptional business successes a result.

The awards ceremony, hosted at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay, was a night to celebrate the achievements of both individuals and businesses.

This year saw the first individual scoop the Winner of Winners Award. Ben Moran from Pall Corporation was recognised as Apprentice of the Year and then went on to become the overall winner in a category usually awarded to a business.

Dave Linnell, CEO of Cornwall College, opened the evening and congratulated all nominees on their success. “The standard of nominations this year was exceptional,” he said.

“The winners deserve particular praise for being recognised as the best in their category. It’s been a wonderful night of entertainment and celebrations and I’ve been humbled to be part of it. Congratulations to all the shortlisted companies and individuals and to our winners tonight.”
