The Atlantic Hotel welcomes plenty of guests for afternoon tea right on the edge of the Cornish coastline. We’ve got plenty of options on offer, cream tea, high tea, afternoon tea, it just depends how indulgent you want to be…
High tea is the ultimate afternoon treat – layers of sumptuous little finger sandwiches, a selection of cakes and scones, and of course, an invigorating pot of tea.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the afternoon tea might be more to your taste with a variety of cakes and scones ready for you to indulge in with a hot beverage.
But sometimes, you can’t beat a classic cream tea. Cornwall’s reputation for mouth-watering cream teas is second to none. So why not enjoy crumbly scones, Cornish clotted cream and lashings of deliciously fruity jam to perk up the afternoon.
Whatever your choice, your tea will be presented to you on a tiered stand for you to enjoy with friends or loved ones, and why not take a stroll around the Cornish coastline afterwards for some panoramic ocean views and refreshing sea air.
We may all love an afternoon tea, but where did it originate?
Tea consumption rocketed in the early 19th century and Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, is reported to be the one to thank for making afternoons that little bit more delicious. She was said to have been complaining of ‘having that sinking feeling’ in the afternoon – which perhaps isn’t surprising as at that time it was only normal to consume just two meals a day; breakfast and a late dinner at around 8pm.
The solution for Anna came in the form of a pot of tea and some light snacks brought to her privately in her boudoir every afternoon – and aren’t we glad that Anna spoke up!
As time went on, Anna’s friends were invited to join her and the event became so popular that Anna continued to have afternoon tea, even when she moved back to London. Other social hostesses caught on to the trend and started having their own afternoon teas too, and soon plenty of fashionable society were indulging in an afternoon treat!
