Those two words, “I do”, are what every man (or woman) wants to hear when they go down on one knee to ask that very special question, heart in mouth and weak at the knees.
As proposals are usually a very private matter, we’ve picked our favourite – and sometimes unconventional – from the flicks for all to enjoy:
Love, Actually
It’s said love transcends all languages, and Jamie (Colin Firth) certainly tries his best to win over his housemaid Aurelia by learning Portuguese and proposing in front of her entire family in their native tongue– she says yes!
Pride and Prejudice
Mr Darcy’s wish “never to be parted” from Elizabeth Bennett (Keira Knightely) stirs the classicalist within us; Jane Austen certainly knows how to push our buttons, even after 200 years.
Gone with the Wind
“I can’t go all my life waiting to catch you between husbands” is Rhett Butler’s line to win over Scarlett O’Hara in David O. Selznick’s motion picture. It’s not particularly traditional, but it certainly does the trick!
Four Weddings and a Funeral
A proposal of sorts: Hugh Grant’s accent and Englishman’s hair will always win us over – even if he is dripping wet.
A Walk to Remember
A quiet balcony, a telescope and an orchestral soundtrack: There’s nothing impersonal about this movie proposal. Asking for a lady’s hand in marriage as a ‘favour’ we feel is a bit of a push for Casanova of the year, but it’s a superb, sensitive scene nonetheless.
The sea views from every room at The Atlantic Hotel makes an excellent opportunity for a romantic weekend away, especially if you plan to ask those four magic words: call us today on 44 (0) 1637 872244.
