January by the Cornish Coast… our take on easing the January Blues

For all the excitement of a new year, January can be a turbulent time. It’s dark, the Christmas decorations have been packed away and that gym membership you signed up for with so much gusto is taunting you from your purse.

When everything seems a bit dull and dreary, the Cornish Coast still sings songs of inspiration and hope. Getting some Vitamin Sea and feeling the salty wind rushing past your ears has got to be one of the best ways to add a spot of rejuvenation to your January.

Immersing yourself in the Cornish landscape is an experience for all the senses. Listen to the sound of the waves from your sea view balcony, smell the seaweed as you stroll along the beach in the winter sunlight, and feel the golden sand beneath your feet as you dare to dip your toes in the cold, majestic ocean.

As Blue Monday fast approaches, we all need something to look forward to, and a luxury Cornish escape to The Atlantic Hotel could be just the thing you need!

Feel refreshed and recharged with our January Offer where you can enjoy three nights for the price of two.

Wrap up warm and take a wintery stroll along the gorgeous local beaches as the crisp January air chills your nose. Enjoy cups of silky coffee on your sea-view balcony and watch the salty waves crash against the shore.

Here at the Atlantic, we think everyone deserves the best and most luxurious start to 2023.

5 Benefits of Cold Water Swimming

With our health more important than ever right now in the world, more and more people are becoming open to looking at alternative methods to increase their general physical and mental health. 2021 took a big toll on everyone, both physically and mentally. During the past two years, and various lockdowns, access to our gyms, pools, and sports centres were limited or removed, and many people turned to cold water sea swimming for their daily exercise.

The past two years have seen such a rise in cold water swimming, that it is now one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities in the UK. Swimming in the sea is nothing new, especially for locals here in Newquay, however more now than just a fun pass time, there is actual science behind consistent exposure to the ocean.

If you are looking for a boost in your physical or mental health, or are just curious to find out what the buzz is all about, here are our top 5 benefits from cold water sea swimming:

Boosted Immune System.

Scientific studies have found that exposure to cold water increases the amount of white blood cells in your body. These blood cells protect your body against diseases. Researchers believe that this process is related to an increased metabolic rate, which stimulates the immune response.

As we approach Christmas the perfect opportunity awaits to try your hand at cold water therapy with the New Years Day swim down on Fistral Beach just a short walk from the hotel. Join in with the many locals as the beach is awash with smiling faces and cold toes!

Helps to combat Depression and Anxiety.

Depression has been linked to a lack of Serotonin and Dopamine, both of which increase when the human body is exposed to cold water. Cold exposure increases levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the bloodstream by as much as 530% and 250%, respectively. Low levels of norepinephrine have been linked to poor mood, brain fog, and lack of focus.

As you will see on any of the faces of the countless swimmers down at Newquay Harbour in the morning, the euphoric feeling may cause instant happiness!

Decreased Inflammation.

The science is simple, your body reacts to the cold temperatures by directing blood away from your extremities to protect the organs in your core.

The low blood flow to your limbs decreases inflammation and allows muscles to recover much quicker. A bracing dip can give you all the benefits of an ice bath.

Glowing Skin.

Swimming in open water – especially seawater – may have beneficial effects on your skin. Saltwater is awash with magnesium, calcium and potassium which is all good news for the skin. Seawater is also a mild antiseptic and may encourage damaged skin to heal.

The Post Swim Feeling.

The fabled after swim high is a real thing, as the mix of exercise and cold-water exposure triggers a release of dopamine, the bodies feel good hormone. If you swim with a friend or in a group, the chance to share and compare your experience with like-minded people intensifies the experience.

Newquay is home to several cold water swimming groups and spoilt for choice with several beautiful cold water dip spots.

As winter approaches the temperatures will begin to drop allowing the perfect time to try this ever-growing activity for yourself. If you would like to book a Winter  Stay here in Newquay be sure to check out our WINTER WARMER OFFER. For more details please visit the link below:

The Beatles Iconic stay at The Atlantic Hotel

1967 – Magical Mystery Tour Beatles Stay

The Atlantic Hotel is extremly proud of its glorious history, and none more so than when the hotel played host to the world’s most famous band ‘The Beatle’s for 3 nights during the filming of The Magical Mystery Tour, in September 1967.

Their stay was part of the iconic Magical Mystery Tour movie, based on a tour around Britain, and brought with it hysteria to the streets of Newquay as Liverpool’s most famous sons arrived to hoards of adoring fans.

It was September 1967, and a few months earlier The Beatles had released their iconic Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, considered by many to be the greatest of all time.

The hotel was mobbed by thousands of fans as the band made their way to the main building for meals. The Atlantic was hit by “Beatlemania” with thousands of fans desperate for a glimpse of their idols.

The tour is believed to have been Paul McCartney’s idea. Driven by a desire for The Beatles to shoot their own television spectacular, he accredited its style to home movies he had been making.

A very lucky few holidaymakers and locals even got a chance to star in the movie, with several locations in and around the hotel featuring in the movie.

In The Complete Beatles Chronicle, author Mark Lewisohn noted that the band originally intended to stop in Newquay for only one night. He wrote: “After considerable private discussion, in which they weighed up the merits of either moving on to a new hotel each day or staying put in one location and using it as a base, they opted for the latter alternative and decided to remain at the Atlantic for three nights: Tuesday to Thursday.”

In the wake of their iconic stay, magical stories from locals began to surface. Speaking in 2002, Doris Freeth, who danced with Paul McCartney in the Atlantic Hotel ballroom, said that it had all been like a dream – even though he was not the best dancer in the world. Chris Parkin said that he sneaked into the hotel with a friend by pretending to be a waiter. They met Paul and Ringo in the hotel cocktail bar, and Chris ended up playing billiards with Ringo for much of the evening.

Today guests to The Atlantic Hotel can retrace the famous fours steps and iconic locations they visited including the pool that was used for the above shot, the front garden where Paul Mccartney spent time engaging with fans, the Huers Hut, and the iconic back garden steps where the now-famous group shot was taken.

Are you or someone you know a huge Beatles fan? Why not book yourself a stay and retrace the footsteps of the world’s most famous band. Call the hotel today on 01637 872244 or email info@atlantichotelnewquay.co.uk.

Top 5 tips for Christmas Party Planning

Top 5 tips for planning a Christmas Party…

Who better to ask about planning a Christmas Party than our Events Manager and all-time super organised Cath! The Atlantic Hotel and Silks Bistro and Champagne Bar welcome a staggering 3,200 Christmas party goers each year, and there isn’t a request she hasn’t had to deal with… here are Cath’s top five tips for planning your Christmas Party…….

# 1. Set the date:

Seems simple but finding a date that can accommodate your colleagues is one of the hardest tasks… The best way is to send a list of potential dates and then go with the majority who can make it…. Make sure of course that Management and Directors can attend- it is so important for those at the top to be there and ensure their team gets the party they deserve!

Remember, you cannot please everyone, but once the date is set, do not change it, this can lead to confusion and can open a real can of worms! Once that date is agreed, make sure you send a “Save the date” email invitation with a read receipt on followed by an email invitation (and of course note anyone who hasn’t read it!) if you can, invite colleagues via their email diaries.

Ensure that there is a clear deadline to RSVP and send reminders on the deadline, numbers always fluctuate, but it is really important to ensure numbers for your budget and the venue are as accurate as possible.

#2. Confirm your budget:

Make sure that you have a clear budget from Management, nothing upsets a team more than being told they are attending an all expenses paid for 5 course meal with drinks, to find that on the night they must all pay per head. Drinks also seem to get everyone in a panic- set out clear instructions on what your colleagues will receive, whether it be wine on the table and then further drinks to be paid by individuals, drinks tokens, or the holy grail- a free bar (not many of these around now!) Will transport be included? By confirming your budget you can save time by contacting venues within your price range only and check their availability.

#3. Set out the type of Christmas party:

It is important to have a vision for the type of Christmas Party you want to hold- will you invite partners? Will it be a dinner or Lunchtime party? Will the team be looking to throw some shapes on the dancefloor and party the night away? Are you looking to team a Conference during the day following into evening meal and party? (You can do this at The Atlantic Hotel with our eclectic group of function rooms) Always refer to past parties and what worked well, and remember bespoke options = generally a higher price tag, however, offers complete flexibility if your budget will allow, packages are more economical and often preferred for the planner (there’s less to consider and decide on)

#4. Venue:

This is the game changer! Accessibility needs to be carefully considered, can everyone get to the venue via car, bus, train or even plane? Is there parking? Will the venue cater for everyone’s needs? Is there disabled access? How many bedrooms are available for colleagues looking to stay overnight? Is the venue experienced in running successful Christmas parties and events? Do they offer adequate menu options to accommodate all dietary requirements? Can they accommodate you on your preferred night? Is there an Events Manager on duty to talk to during your hours of work? Choose the right venue and everything else will fall into place.

#5. Little extras

If budget allows, little gifts, goody bags, certificates, polaroid cameras on the tables, bespoke decorations, can really bring your party together and will have people talking for years to come, the extras may seem small, but they are extra ways to show your staff how they are valued.

Now time for the shameless plug: The Atlantic Hotel offers extensive parking facilities, 57 sea view bedrooms, multiple function rooms seating up to 500, package or bespoke options, a choice of menus for all dietary requirements, and an experienced Events Manager who can work with you to ensure your party is every success! Our December package party nights in The Atlantic Hotel or our AA Rosette Award winning Silks Bistro and Champagne Bar include a 4 course Festive Menu, welcome drink, and entry to the legendary Atlantic Hotel Disco until late, giving you the chance to mingle with other party groups, or go for the bespoke option and create your very own Christmas Party with 7 function rooms to choose from.

Give us a call today on 01637 872244 or visit http://atlantichotelnewquay.co.uk/festive/christmas-parties/  and ensure you plan a 4 star Christmas Party by the Sea and hero status!
