January by the Cornish Coast… our take on easing the January Blues

For all the excitement of a new year, January can be a turbulent time. It’s dark, the Christmas decorations have been packed away and that gym membership you signed up for with so much gusto is taunting you from your purse.

Immersing yourself in the Cornish landscape is an experience for all the senses. Listen to the sound of the waves from your sea view balcony, smell the seaweed as you stroll along the beach in the winter sunlight, and feel the golden sand beneath your feet as you dare to dip your toes in the cold, majestic ocean.

As Blue Monday fast approaches, we all need something to look forward to, and a luxury Cornish escape to The Atlantic Hotel could be just the thing you need!

Feel refreshed and recharged with our January Offer where you can enjoy three nights for the price of two.

5 Benefits of Cold Water Swimming

With our health more important than ever right now in the world, more and more people are becoming open to looking at alternative methods to increase their general physical and mental health. 2021 took a big toll on everyone, both physically and mentally. During the past two years, and various lockdowns, access to our gyms, pools, and sports centres were limited or removed, and many people turned to cold water sea swimming for their daily exercise.

The past two years have seen such a rise in cold water swimming, that it is now one of the fastest-growing outdoor activities in the UK. Swimming in the sea is nothing new, especially for locals here in Newquay, however more now than just a fun pass time, there is actual science behind consistent exposure to the ocean.

If you are looking for a boost in your physical or mental health, or are just curious to find out what the buzz is all about, here are our top 5 benefits from cold water sea swimming:

Boosted Immune System.

Scientific studies have found that exposure to cold water increases the amount of white blood cells in your body. These blood cells protect your body against diseases. Researchers believe that this process is related to an increased metabolic rate, which stimulates the immune response.

As we approach Christmas the perfect opportunity awaits to try your hand at cold water therapy with the New Years Day swim down on Fistral Beach just a short walk from the hotel. Join in with the many locals as the beach is awash with smiling faces and cold toes!

Helps to combat Depression and Anxiety.

Depression has been linked to a lack of Serotonin and Dopamine, both of which increase when the human body is exposed to cold water. Cold exposure increases levels of norepinephrine and dopamine in the bloodstream by as much as 530% and 250%, respectively. Low levels of norepinephrine have been linked to poor mood, brain fog, and lack of focus.

As you will see on any of the faces of the countless swimmers down at Newquay Harbour in the morning, the euphoric feeling may cause instant happiness!

Decreased Inflammation.

The science is simple, your body reacts to the cold temperatures by directing blood away from your extremities to protect the organs in your core.

The low blood flow to your limbs decreases inflammation and allows muscles to recover much quicker. A bracing dip can give you all the benefits of an ice bath.

Glowing Skin.

Swimming in open water – especially seawater – may have beneficial effects on your skin. Saltwater is awash with magnesium, calcium and potassium which is all good news for the skin. Seawater is also a mild antiseptic and may encourage damaged skin to heal.

The Post Swim Feeling.

The fabled after swim high is a real thing, as the mix of exercise and cold-water exposure triggers a release of dopamine, the bodies feel good hormone. If you swim with a friend or in a group, the chance to share and compare your experience with like-minded people intensifies the experience.

Newquay is home to several cold water swimming groups and spoilt for choice with several beautiful cold water dip spots.

As winter approaches the temperatures will begin to drop allowing the perfect time to try this ever-growing activity for yourself. If you would like to book a Winter  Stay here in Newquay be sure to check out our WINTER WARMER OFFER. For more details please visit the link below:

The 5 best things about an Autumn stay in Newquay

Newquay comes alive in summer, the town is vibrant, the warm Cornish sun shines all day long, and summer memories are made. But rarely is Autumn in Newquay spoken about.

Isolated beaches, quiet surf, brisk coastal walks, magical pink sky sunsets and so much more to calm the soul. Newquay in Autumn is a time of magic, and here we’re going to run through the best 5 things about an Autumn stay in Newquay.

1. Isolated beautiful beaches

When the large summer crowds begin to leave, the pace of life in Newquay returns to a slow and calm stroll. Autumn in Newquay is the favourite time of the year for many locals and visitors, as many of the beautiful attractions of Newquay become quiet and calm. Our beaches transform from the buzzing hub of activity they were in Summer, to quiet, serene, isolated spots of beauty.

If your an early riser it’s not uncommon to perhaps even find yourself with a sunrise all to yourself, and perhaps a few of the local surfers in the ocean catching waves as that first bit of Autumn sun catches their boards. If early mornings are not for you, wrap up warm and find a quiet spot in front of the waves as one of our magical Autumn sunsets begins to paint its masterpiece across the sky. Walking, sunset catching, or surfing, the quiet serenity of Newquay’s beaches in Autumn is a home for it all.

2. Magical Surf

Newquay is the home of the UK surf scene, there is no doubt about it. Located on the north coast, it is the epicentre of Cornwall’s surf culture, and in the summer months, thousands upon thousands of people flood to catch waves and take in the culture. The legendary Fistral Beach is a surfing mecca, and when joined with the countless other amazing local beaches to surf available, it’s no wonder Newquay lives for surf. Conditions in summer can be great but the busy sea makes finding that relaxation and perfect wave a challenge.

Come September when the crowds begin to leave, the sea becomes alive with locals catching beautiful waves in much quieter conditions. For anyone wanting to learn lessons are still available locally during this period and with the ocean being much quieter you will be able to try your hand at the local’s favourite pass time with time and space on your side. For those who prefer to watch rather than partake, if the conditions and swell align you may be lucky enough to see Newquay’s infamous Cribbar break. A monstrous wave is tackled by brave locals as spectators gather on the headland. One thing is for certain, surfing in Autumn has everything a professional or beginner could ever dream of.

3. Dramatic Coastal Walks

Newquay is a walkers paradise. Rugged cliffs, stunning coastlines and dream-like views all combine to make some of the UK’s most beautiful walking experiences. Autumn in Newquay is a cocktail of weather all stirred together, ensuring no two walks are the same. Perhaps you will be blessed with a brisk Cornish morning sunrise as you take to the coastal paths, marvelling at the crystal clear water below.

Or maybe you will witness one of our infamous storms. Wrap up warm as you walk and find a safe spot to watch the powerful waves crash into the rugged rocks below. Local wildlife comes alive and can be seen everywhere making a truly magical experience. From the headland path, Bedruthan Steps, Mawgan Porth and Crantock, there is a walk for everyone. Be sure to bring a camera and snap some photos of this lush and vibrant landscape.

4. Sunsets of your dreams

There’s no sunset like a Cornish sunset. Believe us when we tell you that Autumn is home to some of the most moving, and beautiful sunsets you will ever experience in your life. The warm orange glow of summer changes into magical pinks and purples. The sky is painted with colours that photographs will never do justice to, and to sit in front of one is a genuine experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Grab a blanket and those you love, find yourself a quiet spot and marvel as mother nature weaves her magic. Some of the best spots to enjoy an Autumn sunset in Newquay include Fistral Beach, Porth Island, Crantock Beach, and Watergate Bay.

5.  Local Seasonal Attractions

Autumn in Newquay is home to some truly magical special events for locals and visitors alike. In October the Eden Project opens its glittering Ice Rink in the run-up to the Christmas period. Surrounded by magical Biomes and hundreds of lights, this is truly a once in a lifetime experience. For Halloween, there is the iconic Masked Ball, or even try a silent disco on Fistral Beach surrounded by ghouls and ghosts!

Bonfire Night in Newquay is a spectacular affair with hundreds of people gathering by Newquay Harbour to enjoy a firework display full of treats and surprises. With countless activities running throughout the Autumn period in Newquay you are sure to find something to suit you.

10 Reasons to book a staycation in Cornwall this Summer

atlantic-hotel-newquay

The Summer Holidays are here.

Here are 10 reasons why a Staycation in Cornwall is the best choice this Summer…

1: Beaches

Cornwall has over 400 beaches, with 14 beaches in Newquay alone.

Stunning golden sands, crystal clear blue seas, with comparisons of California or the Caribbean, and World-class surf breaks, Cornwall’s beaches rival destinations overseas.

With many beaches patrolled by the RNLI, Cornwall offers a safe environment to enjoy a swim, try out the fantastic watersports on offer, or take a boat trip.

Simple pleasures, such as buying fishing nets, buckets and spades from the local shops, enjoying a picnic (our luxury hampers are nice!) and watching the sunset will make memories forever.

 2: Cuisine

Cornwall is England’s Cuisine Capital, with its fresh produce shipped all over the world.

Home to World famous restaurants and celebrity chefs, Cornwall has 1000’s of restaurants, cafes and deli’s to enjoy.

Nothing beats a piping hot Traditional Cornish Pasty overlooking the sea, and of course, England’s favourite Fish and Chips tastes all the better when the fish is freshly caught and enjoyed on the beach. Afternoon Teas have raged into fashion, with Cornish Clotted Cream, and Jam playing it’s the famous role (always Jam first!!)

Locally caught seafood from Newquay Harbour offers delicious fresh Lobster, Crab, Oysters and Mussels, to name just a few- you don’t have to travel abroad to try something new!

Cornwall is also home to many fine wineries and breweries- Skinners, and St Austell Brewery are producing first-class ales and beers, while wineries such as Camel Valley are winning International awards for their wines.

3: Travel

Hands down a tank of fuel is cheaper than flights for the family, and with children having to pay for a seat from the age of 2 on most airlines, suddenly many families become priced out when looking at travelling abroad. With rail options, and Cornwall Airport’s range of domestic flights at affordable rates from Manchester, Edinborough, London Gatwick, London Heathrow and Dublin, you can be in Cornwall within an hour.

Listening to “Are we there yet” from the backseat, packing snacks, arguing with the sat nav, and finally arriving right outside your hotel form part of the holiday and family memories.

 4: Places to visit

With so many places to visit during your stay, the only thing to do is research and prioritise, the World famous Eden Project is an absolute must for first time visitors.

There are also 100’s of theme parks and family friendly days out ensure that little ones are catered for rain or shine, with discounted entry booklets available in our hotel, the hard part will be deciding where to visit.

Tate St Ives, The Minack Theatre, Land’s End, and Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro offer stunning exhibitions and live performances for a family friendly arts and culture fix.

5: Events

Cornwall has a packed programme of events planned this Summer, from music festivals to food and sailing.

Why not team up your summer holiday with Boardmasters Festival in August (check out our photo below by Tim Borrow!) with Headliners Florence and the Machines, The Foals and Wu Tang Clan. At Fistral beach, live surfing, skateboarding and surf village packed with stalls (look out for our Silks Bistro & Champagne Bar stall!) and bars just a short stroll away from our hotel, this event is for all the family and is not to be missed.  Day tickets are available, so that you can enjoy all the music and events and be home to your luxury sea view room within 15 minutes.

For the foodies there are weekly Farmers Markets all over Cornwall and various famous food festivals, including the famous Rock Oyster Festival in July, and Newlyn Fish Festival in August.

Fowey Regatta and Carnival Week is one of Britain’s Premier Sailing Events, with spectacular firework displays, gig racing, live music, and an appearance from the red arrows.

 6: Watersports

How would you like a coasteering lesson? Surf lesson? Stand up paddleboarding? Kayaking? Kayak fishing? White Water Rafting? Jet-skiing? The list is endless, and all available in Cornwall, just steps away from our hotel. Surfing remains one of the most popular activities in the area and the Cornish surf scene is thriving. Here in Newquay, Escape Surf School are our go-to for both large group and one on one surf lessons from professional surfers and instructors and top of the range facilities.

7: Accessible for all

Travelling in your own vehicle can be the easiest, and least stressful way for families with members who have disabilities. Being able to travel with everything they need, parking outside the entrance to their accommodation, and avoiding long waits, queues, and vast airports can be worth so much.

With full disabled access and our facilities on the ground floor, the Atlantic Hotel can accommodate any guest’s requests and are happy to make any arrangements necessary in the interest of our customer’s comfort.

Our chefs and waiting staff are allergen trained and can adapt our extensive menu accordingly, we are dog-friendly, with allocated rooms for dogs, and we allow guide dogs in all areas of the hotel.

 8: Cost

The cost of staycation can be far cheaper than a holiday abroad, without the costs of flights per person, airport parking, etc, booking a break on your doorstep is often much cheaper for families. With the Sterling at now 1.15 vs the Euro*, gone are the days when you would make double on your cash exchange. By holidaying in the UK you are actively helping the British Economy and supporting the British Tourism industry.

 9: Wildlife

Cornwall is rich with natural wildlife, and offers a wonderful opportunity to educate, and enjoy nature with your children.

Go Dolphin spotting on a boat trip from Newquay’s Harbour, just minutes away from our hotel, and take snaps of sea birds, sun fish and hope to see pods of dolphins jumping in and out the water.

Rockpooling is fun for all ages with crabs, shrimps, starfish, and lots of species of little fish to catch.

Cornish Seagulls often a little too friendly (hold onto your Patsy with a firm grip!) are an iconic image of Cornwall, and waking to the gulls calling in the mornings will stay with you long after your holiday is over.

 10: Accommodation

Voted “Modern Luxury Hotel of the Year 2016” the Atlantic Hotel offers 4 star luxury, with first-class facilities.

As soon as you arrive at our private headland the panoramic ocean views will leave you stunned, everywhere you turn, you can see the sea, and our Art Deco theme, with black and white marble flooring, sweeping staircases, and twinkling chandeliers rival any luxury accommodation World wide.

A Spa Day with Friends- Our competition winners’ story.

We recently ran a competition via the Atlantic Hotel’s social media to find four friends to enjoy a luxury spa day at our Ocean View Treatment Room, and become the face of our spa.

We wanted to capture images of real friends enjoying our exclusive facilities, bespoke treatments and award winning food and drink.

The response was phenomenal! Our competition really seemed to strike a chord on social media, with 100s of entries from women nominating themselves and their friends.

Stories of joy, heartbreak, overcoming all odds, women celebrating their size, 4 generations of families wanting to spend a day together, and much more were shared with us, and above all, our entrants recognising that they deserve some time!

Choosing our winners was such a hard task! After laughing, crying, and feeling inspired by so many stories, we finally chose 4 friends………

Meet Carol, Natalie, Sophia and Emma.

We loved the fact that they have been friends for over 20 years and had been trying to organize a spa day, being busy mums taking some time out to enjoy some time together as friends was really important to them.

We were proud to announce them “The Face of our Spa” and invited them to enjoy a special spa day and photo shoot by nationally acclaimed photographer Mike Searle.

Four very excited ladies were shown to our exclusive spa, and welcome Atlantic themed cocktails were ordered, spa introduction forms were filled in, and after changing into their fluffy robes, our photographer got some shots of the ladies by the pool and in the hot tub looking out to sea. Lots of giggles, and selfies were taken and we left the girls to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views and relaxing spa facilities, including our heated pool, sauna and steam room.

Our Therapist Patsy Bevan performed her signature “Soothe your Mind Body and Soul” back treatments using the relaxing combination oils of Lavender and Chamomile from The Cornish Trevarno Organic Skin Care.

The treatments allowed the ladies to spend time nourishing themselves free from their busy lives and children.

One of our ladies decided to have her nails painted using Zoya Nail Varnish that is also free from all formeldhahyde and harsh chemicals.

With an amazing view, Our Ocean View Treatment Room is pure luxury not to be missed!!

Our ladies opted to stay in their fluffy robes for lunch, which was served in our sea view Café Atlantica, main meals from our extensive specially created spa menu were ordered, with a few more extra cocktails for good measure. Well, you don’t win a luxury spa day every day so celebrations were in order!

Our lovely ladies really did represent our spa beautifully, with images showing friendship and fun that models just cannot match!

Carol said “Thank you & The Atlantic hotel for our amazing day and the opportunity.

We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend the hotel and staff.

Beautiful memories made in a beautiful location”.

Ocean View Spa Days start from only £52pp* including a welcome drink, use of fluffy robes and slippers, a stunning 30-minute treatment, full spa use, and a stunning lunch and drink.
