10 Reasons to book a staycation in Cornwall this Summer

atlantic-hotel-newquay

The Summer Holidays are here.

Here are 10 reasons why a Staycation in Cornwall is the best choice this Summer…

1: Beaches

Cornwall has over 400 beaches, with 14 beaches in Newquay alone.

Stunning golden sands, crystal clear blue seas, with comparisons of California or the Caribbean, and World-class surf breaks, Cornwall’s beaches rival destinations overseas.

With many beaches patrolled by the RNLI, Cornwall offers a safe environment to enjoy a swim, try out the fantastic watersports on offer, or take a boat trip.

Simple pleasures, such as buying fishing nets, buckets and spades from the local shops, enjoying a picnic (our luxury hampers are nice!) and watching the sunset will make memories forever.

 2: Cuisine

Cornwall is England’s Cuisine Capital, with its fresh produce shipped all over the world.

Home to World famous restaurants and celebrity chefs, Cornwall has 1000’s of restaurants, cafes and deli’s to enjoy.

Nothing beats a piping hot Traditional Cornish Pasty overlooking the sea, and of course, England’s favourite Fish and Chips tastes all the better when the fish is freshly caught and enjoyed on the beach. Afternoon Teas have raged into fashion, with Cornish Clotted Cream, and Jam playing it’s the famous role (always Jam first!!)

Locally caught seafood from Newquay Harbour offers delicious fresh Lobster, Crab, Oysters and Mussels, to name just a few- you don’t have to travel abroad to try something new!

Cornwall is also home to many fine wineries and breweries- Skinners, and St Austell Brewery are producing first-class ales and beers, while wineries such as Camel Valley are winning International awards for their wines.

3: Travel

Hands down a tank of fuel is cheaper than flights for the family, and with children having to pay for a seat from the age of 2 on most airlines, suddenly many families become priced out when looking at travelling abroad. With rail options, and Cornwall Airport’s range of domestic flights at affordable rates from Manchester, Edinborough, London Gatwick, London Heathrow and Dublin, you can be in Cornwall within an hour.

Listening to “Are we there yet” from the backseat, packing snacks, arguing with the sat nav, and finally arriving right outside your hotel form part of the holiday and family memories.

 4: Places to visit

With so many places to visit during your stay, the only thing to do is research and prioritise, the World famous Eden Project is an absolute must for first time visitors.

There are also 100’s of theme parks and family friendly days out ensure that little ones are catered for rain or shine, with discounted entry booklets available in our hotel, the hard part will be deciding where to visit.

Tate St Ives, The Minack Theatre, Land’s End, and Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro offer stunning exhibitions and live performances for a family friendly arts and culture fix.

5: Events

Cornwall has a packed programme of events planned this Summer, from music festivals to food and sailing.

Why not team up your summer holiday with Boardmasters Festival in August (check out our photo below by Tim Borrow!) with Headliners Florence and the Machines, The Foals and Wu Tang Clan. At Fistral beach, live surfing, skateboarding and surf village packed with stalls (look out for our Silks Bistro & Champagne Bar stall!) and bars just a short stroll away from our hotel, this event is for all the family and is not to be missed.  Day tickets are available, so that you can enjoy all the music and events and be home to your luxury sea view room within 15 minutes.

For the foodies there are weekly Farmers Markets all over Cornwall and various famous food festivals, including the famous Rock Oyster Festival in July, and Newlyn Fish Festival in August.

Fowey Regatta and Carnival Week is one of Britain’s Premier Sailing Events, with spectacular firework displays, gig racing, live music, and an appearance from the red arrows.

 6: Watersports

How would you like a coasteering lesson? Surf lesson? Stand up paddleboarding? Kayaking? Kayak fishing? White Water Rafting? Jet-skiing? The list is endless, and all available in Cornwall, just steps away from our hotel. Surfing remains one of the most popular activities in the area and the Cornish surf scene is thriving. Here in Newquay, Escape Surf School are our go-to for both large group and one on one surf lessons from professional surfers and instructors and top of the range facilities.

7: Accessible for all

Travelling in your own vehicle can be the easiest, and least stressful way for families with members who have disabilities. Being able to travel with everything they need, parking outside the entrance to their accommodation, and avoiding long waits, queues, and vast airports can be worth so much.

With full disabled access and our facilities on the ground floor, the Atlantic Hotel can accommodate any guest’s requests and are happy to make any arrangements necessary in the interest of our customer’s comfort.

Our chefs and waiting staff are allergen trained and can adapt our extensive menu accordingly, we are dog-friendly, with allocated rooms for dogs, and we allow guide dogs in all areas of the hotel.

 8: Cost

The cost of staycation can be far cheaper than a holiday abroad, without the costs of flights per person, airport parking, etc, booking a break on your doorstep is often much cheaper for families. With the Sterling at now 1.15 vs the Euro*, gone are the days when you would make double on your cash exchange. By holidaying in the UK you are actively helping the British Economy and supporting the British Tourism industry.

 9: Wildlife

Cornwall is rich with natural wildlife, and offers a wonderful opportunity to educate, and enjoy nature with your children.

Go Dolphin spotting on a boat trip from Newquay’s Harbour, just minutes away from our hotel, and take snaps of sea birds, sun fish and hope to see pods of dolphins jumping in and out the water.

Rockpooling is fun for all ages with crabs, shrimps, starfish, and lots of species of little fish to catch.

Cornish Seagulls often a little too friendly (hold onto your Patsy with a firm grip!) are an iconic image of Cornwall, and waking to the gulls calling in the mornings will stay with you long after your holiday is over.

 10: Accommodation

Voted “Modern Luxury Hotel of the Year 2016” the Atlantic Hotel offers 4 star luxury, with first-class facilities.

As soon as you arrive at our private headland the panoramic ocean views will leave you stunned, everywhere you turn, you can see the sea, and our Art Deco theme, with black and white marble flooring, sweeping staircases, and twinkling chandeliers rival any luxury accommodation World wide.

Sandy paws welcome – we’re dog-friendly at the Atlantic Hotel

dog friendly hotel

Cornwall and Newquay are a doggie paradise, and with several long, sandy beaches that are dog-friendly year-round right on our doorstep, it hardly seems fair to leave your four-legged friend at home. Great news, when you’re staying at the Atlantic, there’s no need to; dogs, and their well-behaved owners are always welcome.

To make Fido feel at home, we’ve got pet beds and bowls for your room, so you don’t have to pack them, and we’ll have a special doggie goody bag waiting for him when you check-in.

Dogs are welcome throughout the hotel, except Silks Bistro and the breakfast room. (You can always bring Fido with you and dine on the breakfast terrace if he doesn’t like to be left alone – just let us know). And we’ve got extra beds, bowls and treats in Cafe Atlantica, so your pooch can relax whilst you catch up on the papers with a freshly brewed coffee or a crisp, refreshing beer.

With plenty of holes to be dug, beaches to explore and ocean to romp in, plus a comfy bed for when he’s finally exhausted himself, we bet Fido can’t wait to stay with us at the Atlantic Hotel.

Our Top Three Tips for a Memorable Coastal Wedding

We know how important your big day is and we also know that everybody wants their wedding to be unique. So when it comes to pulling off the celebrations, here are some of our top tips for adding a personalised touch to make your perfect, memorable coastal wedding.

Don’t have an ordinary guest book

Anyone that gets to wander along the coast frequently knows that there’s a whole host of beachy pebbles that come in all shapes and sizes. Why not try taking some of your favourites and placing them on tables with metallic pens for your guests to write on, instead of a traditional guest book. That way you can display them somewhere in your house and enjoy memories of your wedding day, as well as having a token from a nice romantic pebble picking walk for two along the shore. Plus, carefully placed amongst flowers, candles or lights, your guest book stones can act as your coastal table centrepieces.

Spoil your guests, whatever the weather

When you’re planning a wedding somewhere as spectacular as Cornwall, you’re always hoping that the weather will be beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Even if it rains, when you’re getting married somewhere surrounded by beaches and fantastic views, it seems a shame for your guests to miss out. Why not arrange to have some pairs of wellies and umbrellas available to your guests in case they want to get some fresh air and take in the stunning scenery. Additionally, you can put some disposable cameras on the tables and encourage guests to snap some shots while out enjoying the views, giving you some spontaneous photos of guests amid a stunning backdrop.

Make your own wedding rings

Cornwall prides itself on its arts and craft culture which has become more established as the years go on. Whether you live in Cornwall or you’re making the trip to get married here, you can make your wedding more memorable by making your own wedding rings. It’s not only likely to be a talking point amongst guests on the day, but it adds a very personal touch to your marriage knowing you’re wearing a one of a kind piece designed and made by your partner. There’s a choice of places that offer you the opportunity to make your own wedding rings in Cornwall, so why not have a fun experience together ahead of the big day to release any stress from months of wedding planning.

Three ways to enjoy the sea this summer

newquay beaches

Ah, the sea…

There’s really nothing quite like a summertime exploration of the planet’s biggest playground. Here’s our guide to how best embrace this living landscape on a luxury summer holiday in Cornwall.

Surf’s SUP!

Whether you’re a seasoned boarder or are taking your first tentative steps in a wetsuit, Fistral Beach is a perfect space to let loose and have fun – especially as it’s mere footsteps from our hotel!

The simple pleasure of stand up paddle-boarding combined with the friendly tuition at Newquay Watersports Centre means that anyone can quickly learn to glide across the ocean in style.

Coasteering

Our warm, luxurious beds may be hard to leave in the morning, but the thrill of exploring smuggler’s caves, experiencing natural water currents and witnessing marine life in its natural habitat is definitely worth the temperature drop.

Whether you’re a family on your summer break, a couple on a romantic getaway or adventurers enjoying a sophisticated stay by the sea, the coast has hidden treasures waiting just for you. Find out more.

Paddle, paddle

If the thought of slipping into a wetsuit isn’t your idea of fun, the simple pleasure of a hand-in-hand paddle after a coastal walk is absolute heaven.

The sea foam swirling around your toes is a simple pleasure as you bask in the sun and walk along the sand.

Many of our guests embrace the Atlantic Ocean as much as they do The Atlantic Hotel, and with a sea view from every room, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

A stylish, succulent, superb new menu for Silks

A stylish, succulent, superb new menu for Silks

The Silks kitchen team has been very busy behind the scenes, and from a kitchen of locally sourced seafood, international cooking experience and an AA rosette comes our new menu, devised under the expert eye of Head Chef Mark Treadwell.

This new menu encapsulates everything we love about dining on the coast: style, substance and a little something special that only an AA rosette can bring to the table.

Celebrating an anniversary? The rich simplicity of poached lobster is a fantastic accompaniment to a family toast, or you could push the boat out with lobster thermidore; delicate, creamy, delicious. A fantastic spectacle as well as a superb dish!

Special input from Head Chef Mark Treadwell sees a grand array of seafood throughout the new menu, from locally sourced Newlyn crab cakes to dishes of peppery cayenne floured squid and expertly seared scallops; there’s just no excuse not to be a seafood fan at Silks.

Being so close to the sea, it would be an injustice not to feature a classic beer battered cod, complete with hand cut chips and a homemade tartare sauce. The crisp texture of a fine batter with such artisan accompaniments always, always goes down magnificently.

The show-stopper has to be the trio of pork, a delightful arrangement of slow cooked pork belly, cheek, and an expertly seasoned black pudding bonbon. Always served with seasonal vegetables, you’ll be getting a personal taste of Cornwall no matter which time in the year you visit.

Refuel after cliff path explorations with an exclusive Silks high tea for two; or for a sweet sugar rush during a romantic evening rendezvous pick a lemon & raspberry baked cheesecake, or perhaps a smooth hot dark & white chocolate fondant with luxurious clotted cream. Heaven.

This is just for starters, please contact Silks on 01637 839048 for the full menu and daily specials; be quick, our new dishes are already causing a stir!
