Why Cornwall in Autumn is the perfect off-season escape

6 September 2024

When people think of Cornwall, their minds often drift to summer. Sun soaked beaches, surfboards gliding along crystal waves, and ice creams melting under Cornish sun. But Cornwall is much more than simply a destination only for summer seekers, for a magical side of the county truly reveals itself in the Autumn. The warm air continues to flow through the sand dunes, however the crowds begin to thin out and Cornwall transforms into a peaceful seaside retreat. Here’s why visiting Cornwall in the autumn might just be the best decision you’ve made all year.

1) Autumnal tones blanketing the scenery

We think that Autumn is one of the most captivating seasons to visit in, with its already stunning scenery transforming into hues of burnt orange and rouge. Take a walk through Tehidy Woods or Golitha Falls and admire the beauty of the gold and amber leaves covering the canopy, or take a stroll along the South West Coast path and be treated to the beauty of mother nature and her dramatic coastline. You can experience all this natural beauty in the Autumn, without the hustle and bustle of the summer crowds.

2) Summer beaches which are just as beautiful

While the summer months draw thousands of holidaymakers to the beach, the autumn provides beaches which are equally as stunning, with far more room to decide where you will place your beach blanket on a warm day, or stroll along on brisk days. Imagine a walk along Porthcurno or the picturesque Kynance Cove, just you and the waves.

For budding surfers, autumn offers some of the best waves of the year, with the water still relatively warm from the summer months and swells from the Atlantic rolling in, it offers the best aspects from the seasons. We are very lucky to be located just a stone’s throw from some of the county’s best surfing spots, including the iconic Fistral Beach, and Watergate.

3) Autumn sunsets

One of our favourite things about Cornwall throughout the seasons is the sunsets. They never fail to take our breath away, and autumn creates some of the best all year. The lower angle of the sun creates a softer, golden light in the evenings which is ideal for photography or simply sitting on Little Fistral and soaking in the colours as the sun dips beneath the horizon.

4) Cosy Hideaways and Warm Hospitality

After a day of exploring, there’s no better feeling than retreating to a cosy Cornish hotel, where you can curl up and still enjoy the beautiful views of the sea from the comfort of your bed. Autumn also offers explorers excellent rates on rooms, as the county tends to quieten down.

As a dog friendly hotel, your four legged friend need not be doomed for the kennels during your trip. They can enjoy the beautiful surrounds too!

 To conclude…

Cornwall in autumn is a hidden gem. The combination of fewer crowds, stunning landscapes, mild weather, and excellent rates on accommodation make it the ideal destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and experience a more authentic side of the county. Whether you’re drawn by the allure of quiet beaches, outdoor adventures, or cosy retreats, autumn in Cornwall offers a magical experience you won’t forget.

So this autumn, trade the summer rush for a slower, more peaceful pace, and discover the charm and beauty of Cornwall in a whole new light.
