Top 5 tips for Christmas Party Planning

Top 5 tips for planning a Christmas Party…

Who better to ask about planning a Christmas Party than our Events Manager and all-time super organised Cath! The Atlantic Hotel and Silks Bistro and Champagne Bar welcome a staggering 3,200 Christmas party goers each year, and there isn’t a request she hasn’t had to deal with… here are Cath’s top five tips for planning your Christmas Party…….

# 1. Set the date:

Seems simple but finding a date that can accommodate your colleagues is one of the hardest tasks… The best way is to send a list of potential dates and then go with the majority who can make it…. Make sure of course that Management and Directors can attend- it is so important for those at the top to be there and ensure their team gets the party they deserve!

Remember, you cannot please everyone, but once the date is set, do not change it, this can lead to confusion and can open a real can of worms! Once that date is agreed, make sure you send a “Save the date” email invitation with a read receipt on followed by an email invitation (and of course note anyone who hasn’t read it!) if you can, invite colleagues via their email diaries.

Ensure that there is a clear deadline to RSVP and send reminders on the deadline, numbers always fluctuate, but it is really important to ensure numbers for your budget and the venue are as accurate as possible.

#2. Confirm your budget:

Make sure that you have a clear budget from Management, nothing upsets a team more than being told they are attending an all expenses paid for 5 course meal with drinks, to find that on the night they must all pay per head. Drinks also seem to get everyone in a panic- set out clear instructions on what your colleagues will receive, whether it be wine on the table and then further drinks to be paid by individuals, drinks tokens, or the holy grail- a free bar (not many of these around now!) Will transport be included? By confirming your budget you can save time by contacting venues within your price range only and check their availability.

#3. Set out the type of Christmas party:

It is important to have a vision for the type of Christmas Party you want to hold- will you invite partners? Will it be a dinner or Lunchtime party? Will the team be looking to throw some shapes on the dancefloor and party the night away? Are you looking to team a Conference during the day following into evening meal and party? (You can do this at The Atlantic Hotel with our eclectic group of function rooms) Always refer to past parties and what worked well, and remember bespoke options = generally a higher price tag, however, offers complete flexibility if your budget will allow, packages are more economical and often preferred for the planner (there’s less to consider and decide on)

#4. Venue:

This is the game changer! Accessibility needs to be carefully considered, can everyone get to the venue via car, bus, train or even plane? Is there parking? Will the venue cater for everyone’s needs? Is there disabled access? How many bedrooms are available for colleagues looking to stay overnight? Is the venue experienced in running successful Christmas parties and events? Do they offer adequate menu options to accommodate all dietary requirements? Can they accommodate you on your preferred night? Is there an Events Manager on duty to talk to during your hours of work? Choose the right venue and everything else will fall into place.

#5. Little extras

If budget allows, little gifts, goody bags, certificates, polaroid cameras on the tables, bespoke decorations, can really bring your party together and will have people talking for years to come, the extras may seem small, but they are extra ways to show your staff how they are valued.

Now time for the shameless plug: The Atlantic Hotel offers extensive parking facilities, 57 sea view bedrooms, multiple function rooms seating up to 500, package or bespoke options, a choice of menus for all dietary requirements, and an experienced Events Manager who can work with you to ensure your party is every success! Our December package party nights in The Atlantic Hotel or our AA Rosette Award winning Silks Bistro and Champagne Bar include a 4 course Festive Menu, welcome drink, and entry to the legendary Atlantic Hotel Disco until late, giving you the chance to mingle with other party groups, or go for the bespoke option and create your very own Christmas Party with 7 function rooms to choose from.

A Spa Day with Friends- Our competition winners’ story.

We recently ran a competition via the Atlantic Hotel’s social media to find four friends to enjoy a luxury spa day at our Ocean View Treatment Room, and become the face of our spa.

We wanted to capture images of real friends enjoying our exclusive facilities, bespoke treatments and award winning food and drink.

The response was phenomenal! Our competition really seemed to strike a chord on social media, with 100s of entries from women nominating themselves and their friends.

Stories of joy, heartbreak, overcoming all odds, women celebrating their size, 4 generations of families wanting to spend a day together, and much more were shared with us, and above all, our entrants recognising that they deserve some time!

Choosing our winners was such a hard task! After laughing, crying, and feeling inspired by so many stories, we finally chose 4 friends………

Meet Carol, Natalie, Sophia and Emma.

We loved the fact that they have been friends for over 20 years and had been trying to organize a spa day, being busy mums taking some time out to enjoy some time together as friends was really important to them.

We were proud to announce them “The Face of our Spa” and invited them to enjoy a special spa day and photo shoot by nationally acclaimed photographer Mike Searle.

Four very excited ladies were shown to our exclusive spa, and welcome Atlantic themed cocktails were ordered, spa introduction forms were filled in, and after changing into their fluffy robes, our photographer got some shots of the ladies by the pool and in the hot tub looking out to sea. Lots of giggles, and selfies were taken and we left the girls to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views and relaxing spa facilities, including our heated pool, sauna and steam room.

Our Therapist Patsy Bevan performed her signature “Soothe your Mind Body and Soul” back treatments using the relaxing combination oils of Lavender and Chamomile from The Cornish Trevarno Organic Skin Care.

The treatments allowed the ladies to spend time nourishing themselves free from their busy lives and children.

One of our ladies decided to have her nails painted using Zoya Nail Varnish that is also free from all formeldhahyde and harsh chemicals.

With an amazing view, Our Ocean View Treatment Room is pure luxury not to be missed!!

Our ladies opted to stay in their fluffy robes for lunch, which was served in our sea view Café Atlantica, main meals from our extensive specially created spa menu were ordered, with a few more extra cocktails for good measure. Well, you don’t win a luxury spa day every day so celebrations were in order!

Our lovely ladies really did represent our spa beautifully, with images showing friendship and fun that models just cannot match!

Carol said “Thank you & The Atlantic hotel for our amazing day and the opportunity.

We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend the hotel and staff.

Beautiful memories made in a beautiful location”.

Ocean View Spa Days start from only £52pp* including a welcome drink, use of fluffy robes and slippers, a stunning 30-minute treatment, full spa use, and a stunning lunch and drink. Our luxurious, exclusive spa offers a wonderfully relaxing day to remember forever. https://atlantichotelnewquay.co.uk/specials/5180/ or call 01637 872244 and book your spa day.

10 Reasons to book a holiday in Cornwall this Summer

With just a few weeks to go until the Summer Holidays many of us are now looking at where they will spend their break… Home??? Abroad???

Here are 10 reasons why a Staycation in Cornwall is your best choice this Summer…..

1: Beaches

Cornwall has over 400 beaches, with 14 beaches in Newquay alone.

Stunning golden sands, crystal clear blue seas, with comparisons of California or the Caribbean, and World class surf breaks, Cornwall’s beaches rival destinations oversees.

With many beaches patrolled by the RNLI, Cornwall offers a safe environment to enjoy a swim, try out the fantastic watersports on offer, or take a boat trip.

Simple pleasures, such as buying fishing nets, buckets and spades from the local shops, enjoying a picnic (our luxury hampers are nice!) and watching the sunset will make memories forever.

 2: Cuisine

Cornwall is England’s Cuisine Capital, with it’s produce shipped all over the world.

Home to World famous restaurants and celebrity chefs, Cornwall has 1000’s of restaurants, cafes and deli’s to enjoy.

Nothing beats a piping hot Traditional Cornish Pasty overlooking the sea, and of course, England’s favourite Fish and Chips tastes all the better when the fish is freshly caught and enjoyed on the beach. Afternoon Teas have raged into fashion, with Cornish Clotted Cream, and Jam playing it’s famous role (always Jam first!!)

Locally caught seafood from Newquay Harbour offers delicious fresh Lobster, Crab, Oysters and Mussels, to name just a few- you don’t have to travel abroad to try something new!

Cornwall is also home to many fine wineries and breweries- Skinners, and St Austell Brewery are producing first class ales and beers, while wineries such as Camel Valley are winning International awards for their wines.

3: Travel

Hands down a tank of fuel is cheaper than flights for the family, and with children having to pay for a seat from the age of 2 on most airlines, suddenly many families become priced out when looking at travelling abroad. With rail options, and Cornwall Airport’s range of domestic flights at affordable rates from Manchester, Edinborough, London Gatwick, and Dublin, you can be in Cornwall within an hour.

Listening to “Are we there yet” from the backseat, packing snacks, arguing with the sat nav, and finally arriving right outside your hotel form part of the holiday and family memories.

 4: Places to visit

With so many places to visit during your stay, the only thing to do is research and prioritise, the World famous Eden Project is an absolute must for first time visitors.

There are also 100’s of theme parks and family friendly days out ensure that little ones are catered for rain or shine, with discounted entry booklets available in our hotel, the hard part will be deciding where to visit.

Tate St Ives, The Minack Theatre, Land’s End, and Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro offer stunning exhibitions and live performances for a family friendly arts and culture fix.

5: Events

Cornwall has a packed programme of events planned this Summer, from music festivals to food and sailing.

Why not team up your summer holiday with Boardmasters Festival in August (check out our photo below by Tim Borrow!) with Headliners Two Door Cinema Club, Alt-J and Jamiroqui, and at the beach, live surfing, skateboarding and surf village packed with stalls (look out for our Silks Bistro & Champagne Bar stall!) and bars just a short stroll away from our hotel, this event is for all the family and is not to be missed.  Day tickets are available, so that you can enjoy all the music and events and be home to your luxury sea view room within 15 minutes.

For the foodies there are weekly Farmers Markets all over Cornwall and various famous food festivals, including the famous Rock Oyster Festival in July, and Newlyn Fish Festival in August.

Fowey Regatta and Carnival Week is one of Britain’s Premier Sailing Events, with spectacular firework displays, gig racing, live music, and an appearance from the red arrows.

 6: Watersports

Fancy riding on a banana boat? Hiring a speedboat? A coasteering lesson? Surf lesson? Stand up paddle boarding?

Kayaking, Kayak fishing, White Water Rafting, Power Kiting, Jet-skiing. The list is endless, and all available in Cornwall, just steps away from our Hotel.

7: Accessible for all

Travelling in your own vehicle can be the easiest, and least stressful way for families with members who have disabilities. Being able to travel with everything they need, parking outside the entrance to their accommodation, and avoiding long waits, queues, and vast airports can be worth so much.

With full disabled access, and our facilities on ground floor, the Atlantic Hotel can accommodate any guest’s requests, and are happy to make any arrangements necessary in the interest of our customer’s comfort.

Our chefs and waiting staff are allergen trained, and can adapt our extensive menu accordingly, we are dog friendly, with allocated rooms for dogs, and we allow guide dogs in all areas of the hotel.

 8: Cost

The cost of staycation can be far cheaper than a holiday abroad, without the costs of flights per person, airport parking, etc, booking a break on your doorstep is often much cheaper for families.

With the Sterling at now 1.15 vs the Euro*, gone are the days when you would make double on your cash exchange.

No standing in queues to change your currency, no desperately trying to work out how something costs in £’s, all the little added stresses taken away!

By holidaying in the UK you are actively helping the British Economy and supporting the British Tourism industry.

 9: Wildlife

Cornwall is rich with natural wildlife, and offers a wonderful opportunity to educate, and enjoy nature with your children.

Go Dolphin spotting on a boat trip from Newquay’s Harbour, just minutes away from our hotel, and take snaps of sea birds, sun fish and hope to see pods of dolphins jumping in and out the water.

Rockpooling is fun for all ages with crabs, shrimps, starfish, and lots of species of little fish to catch.

Cornish Seagulls often a little too friendly (hold onto your Patsy with a firm grip!) are an iconic image of Cornwall, and waking to the gulls calling in the mornings will stay with you long after your holiday is over.

 10: Accommodation

May Day is known to be the oldest dance festival in the country and is said to be traced back to the early 1800’s and is a celebration of spring (and rumours of an ancient fertility festival which some believe to this day!)

Padstow is decorated with flags and flowers. Padstow residents dress in white with their loyalties made known with a red or blue ribbon (the Old Oss is red)

From 8am the streets are filled with children, with their homemade Obby Oss’s ready to display. The blue Oss makes its first appearance from its stable at around 10am, followed by the old Red Oss at 11am. Both Osses dance through the streets and are prodded by Teasers and followed by their parade of supporters dancing around the Oss and the Mayers singing, drumming and playing accordion’s through the streets, the Osses finally dance around the Maypole and head back to their stables before dark.

What to expect:

Tens of thousands of people, with an unbeatable Cornish atmosphere!

Lots of cheer! The official celebrations start at midnight, so expect packed pubs and gardens with lots of drinking and toasting!

Unstoppable dancing The Cornish revellers have waited all year for this special day and nothing will stop them dancing, the only thing to do is join in!

Once in a lifetime photo opportunities – A sea of thousands of people dressed in white, the backdrop of the beautiful harbour and the glittering sea, and colourful flags and flowers waving in the wind is a once in a lifetime opportunity- bringing your camera is a must!

A scenic journey to Pastow  The journey itself from Newquay to Padstow is beautiful, winding along the famous Watergate Bay, past beautiful fields home to Boardmasters Festival in August, Bedruthan Steps, Mawgan Porth, following the coastline through to Padstow- there are so many photo opportunities, the short 25 minute journey to Padstow may take a while!

Our Celebrity Guest- Austin Armacost

We welcomed Celebrity Big Brother runner up and ALLSTAR Austin Armacost on our VIP Spa Package this month.

Read our exclusive interview on his first impression of Cornwall, his thoughts on our Hotel, and his 2017 plans……

Austin, We hear this has been your first visit to Cornwall, what do you think?

I found it beautiful even though it was a bit of a foggy day. The fresh sea air blew through the windows and rejuvenated me every couple of minutes. Listening to the sea gulls outside the window also just added to the coastal ambiance. The people were also extremely friendly, inviting, and entertaining.

You certainly deserve a VIP Spa break after such a busy start to the year- what made you choose the Atlantic Hotel?

First and foremost was the price. I am always nervous about finding a “package deal” that seems to have everything you need with an incredible price. However, the Atlantic went above and beyond in all aspects (food, treatment, facilities) and I thought what a wonderful weekend getaway. The Atlantic is much more than just a hotel & spa… You can truly spend the entire day on the property with so many amenities at your fingertips.

As part of your Spa package, you enjoyed lunch in our AA Rosette Restaurant, Silks- what did you order?

We started with the oysters and followed with the belly pork and sea bass pasta. Everything was hot, tasty, and done with it’s own twist. The champagne and wine selection was impressive. The dining room itself also offered a view everywhere you turned and so much natural light. I enjoyed several cocktails throughout the day sitting in different parts of the dining room / bar area.

We hope our Spa treatment left you relaxed and refreshed, what was the best bit?

I had a full body massage and enjoyed every second and every inch of it. She was calming and relaxing herself and that helped me to relax. Also getting a massage while overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is something I had never done, PRICELESS! Then taking a dip into to the pool and jacuzzi truly helped me get into a “zen zone.”

Any exciting plans for the year ahead we should know about?

Unfortunately in my business (television) we aren’t always aloud to discuss upcoming projects but you will be seeing me on television again soon. I also am singing with a new film agent in London so may be on the big screen here in the UK sooner than later. In my personal life, my partner and I are headed to America in a few days for him to meet my family for the first time.

*Big thanks to the entire staff as it was lovely from check in to check out, well done team Atlantic!

Our VIP Spa Break is available until 7th April 2017
Family picnic

The Atlantic Hotel Staff’s Easter Escape suggestions

Family picnic

The Easter Holidays are approaching…….We know! Kids off again? Haven’t they just had Half Term? Christmas wasn’t that long ago! So, the kids will be off for nearly 3 weeks, and you need to book time off work and have a break away!

You can tick off your Family Bucket List, and make memories to treasure forever with a stay in Cornwall.

Here are a few suggestions from the people who know Cornwall the best- The Atlantic Hotel Staff!

Cath- General Manager:  “Visit the World famous Eden Project and brave family members can fly on England’s longest and fastest zip wire, plummet at 50mph from 65ft over a cliff edge on a giant swing, or take a leap of faith from a 12-metre platform!” Younger family members, or the less daring can enjoy Eden’s beautiful gardens, biomes, and wonderful cafe! Come back in time for a drink on our terrace to relax, or take a swim in our sea view pool before dinner.”

Esther – Marketing: “Wiggle into wetsuits and take a surf lesson with our approved Surf School, and find out who’s the top wave rider in the family! Or simply pick up some fishing nets and buckets and spades from the little shops in Newquay Town and head to the beach for some rockpooling and sandcastle making! You can order a range of picnic hampers at The Atlantic Hotel and make a day of it!”

Debbie – Reception: “St Michael’s Mount, although a little drive away is wonderful! Check the tide times with us at reception and plan your day so that you can arrive when the tide is out and walk to the famous historical island and ancient castle, after a magical day you can get the ferry back.

David- Maintenance: Photography is a passion of mine! Our hotel is set in 10 acres of it’s own private headland and offers wonderful coastal walks, suitable for all the family right on our doorstep! Get your cameras ready, and set off on adventure, see who can capture the best shot of the day, and be sure to look out for dolphins in the bay. Head back to the hotel and pick the winning photo over a frothy hot chocolate or something cold!

Dean- Head Chef: Easter Sunday Lunch in our AA Rosette awarded Bistro is the main event! I have created a delicious 3 course Sunday Lunch, with an Easter twist! Enjoy locally sourced meats served at your table on our silver trolley, and team this with one of our delicious local wines. Our Easter Sunday Lunch is to be enjoyed at your leisure, a real celebration of good food, good wines, and indulgence!  While the grown ups are busy relaxing, the kids can go and have fun on the Easter Egg hunt, organised by our staff around the grounds, and our ballroom will be open with giant board games, and an Easter film for the kids to enjoy.

Cheers to 125 Years!

This March The Atlantic Hotel will celebrate 125 years. Our iconic Hotel has been part of Newquay’s skyline since 1892. Read on to discover the  history behind our Hotel, including opening woes, patriotic duties in WWII,  and our part in The Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour”

The Atlantic Hotel’s Grand Opening in 1892

After The Cornish Hotel Company acquired a lease for 10 acres of The Beacon, 1890, the Council approved the development due to the decline of the pilchard fishing industry, and recognising that there was a need to expand the holiday trade, and bring money in Newquay. Designed by architect Silvanus Trevail, (lovely Cornish name!) the Atlantic Hotel was one of the first purpose built, luxury hotels in Newquay, containing more than 100 apartments. The grand opening in 1892 unfortunately coincided with a vicious outbreak of Scarlet Fever in the town, which reportedly saw visitor steer clear. The hotel worked hard to build it’s reputation, and it did not take long for the iconic Hotel to become the jewel in Newquay’s tourism crown.

WWII- The Atlantic Hotel’s Patriotic Duties, and very exclusive makeover

The Atlantic Hotel was turned into a hospital during WWII helping injured soldiers recover back to health. Once the patients were ambulant, they wore bright blue uniforms with white shirts and red ties, and were allowed into the town. The hotel was re-opened later in the year, following some alterations. 1935 saw the cocktail lounge decorated and furnished by the world famous Harrods of London in 1935, and the re-opening saw over 400 guests attend.

The Fab Four on the Magical Mystery Tour

Famous faces have often enjoyed a stay at The Atlantic Hotel, including the Beatles in September 1967, the fab four stayed for 3 nights whilst filming footage for the Magical Mystery Tour. Reports are that The Beatles created the cover for their album, Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band from the Atlantic Hotel.

A new ownership, hard work, and awards

The Atlantic Hotel was bought by the current owners, the  (Late) Mr Cobley, Mrs Cobley, and their daughters, Lorraine and Claire in 1986. The family  have invested in numerous extensions and alterations over the years to present, from extending the ballroom and creating a sun terrace and gazebo, to most recently, the complete refurbishment of their indoor leisure facilities, including sea view indoor pool, hot tub and steam room, and the addition of The Ocean View Treatment Room, now open to non-residents. The four star hotel has 57 Sea View bedrooms, with a mix of suites, superior rooms, and classic doubles. The Art-Deco theme, and panoramic views certainly ensure that guests will enjoy real luxury from the moment they arrive.

Hard work, commitment and quality of produce saw the resident restaurant, Silks Bistro & Champagne Bar awarded the first AA Rosette in Newquay in 2014. The awards have kept coming, including Taste West Awards, and Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence. The Atlantic Hotel was also awarded “Modern Luxury Hotel of the Year 2016” by The Luxury Travel Guide. There are many exciting plans ahead, but one thing will remain: the warm welcome, luxurious surroundings, and a commitment to provide locals and holiday makers alike with luxury surroundings, and first class service.

Cheers to 125 Years!
