Best Poolside Reads

10 August 2016

We love spending time by the Atlantic outdoor pool, we think it has the best poolside view of any outdoor pool in Cornwall! So we’ve put together our list of the best summer reads to complement the magnificent view! There’s nothing better than a good book (well, perhaps a cocktail to go with that great read!). Here is a top 5 list of books to read this summer whilst dipping your toe in and sipping a Mojito!

Under a Cornish Sky – Liz Fenwick

The only thing we love more than chick lit romance novel is one based in and written in Cornwall! Liz Fenwick always delivers and her latest is no exception to the rule! Telling the story of two separate women; dead-end Demi escaping to Cornwall after missing out on her dream job and being betrayed by her boyfriend, and widow Victoria, about to inherit Boscawen, the stunning Cornish estate she has been waiting for. But of course, there’s a surprise in store! And not only that, there is a side order of stunning Cornish scenery too as Fenwick transports us from season to season.

The Unmumsy Mum

This book is a must-read for any mothers. It is not a parenting manual, this is real life and is incredibly candid and hilarious! Packed with all of the lessons from her journey, from birth to teething, night feeds to tantrums, this is a fantastic book for making you realise we’re all in it together! Be warned if you’re reading this in public, you will laugh. Loudly!

A Year of Marvellous Ways – Sarah Winman

Another beautiful book set in Cornwall, this story follows an eighty-nine year old woman who sits by a creek in Cornwall waiting for her last adventure and what happens when young soldier Francis Drake washes up there, reeling from the war and broken hearted! The book introduces an element of fantasy and is written in an almost poetic way, making it a little less light hearted than the other books on this list but completely capturing the magic and charm of Cornwall.

A Good Catch – Fern Britton

A Sunday Times top ten bestseller, A Good Catch tells the tale of complicated friendships, love and drama, all set in our stunning county in the fictional fishing village of Trevay, with a fantastic start to the book that will hook you instantly! The perfect poolside read by Fern Britton.

Eat Pray Love – Elizabeth Gilbert

Although this book is not new, it’s a best seller with over 10 million copies sold worldwide. It’s the tale of one woman’s journey through three countries to find herself and escape the life she feels trapped in. It manages to weave a beautiful story even though it is deep and connected in what it teaches. The ideal novel to dive into next to the outdoor pool, looking at the sea view and being transported to new beginnings. Elle Macpherson says that every woman should read it, that’s reason enough for us!
